With superpowers Alabama and LSU also residing in the SEC West Division, neither No. 15 Auburn Tigers nor No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks can likely afford a loss in their matchup on Saturday evening if they still have hopes of reaching the SEC Championship Game. The Razorbacks have opened as a 10-point favorite on Bodog Sportsbook’s NCAA football odds.
The defending SEC and national champion Tigers (4-1, 2-0 SEC ) got a huge conference win last week, beating South Carolina 16-13 in a rematch of last year’s SEC title game. Tigers QB Barrett Trotter found Philip Lutzenkirchen for the go-ahead, 9-yard touchdown with 1:38 left. The Auburn defense had been gouged by Clemson for 624 yards in a loss the week before but held USC to just 289 and forced four turnovers. The Tigers are still at the bottom of the league in scoring, total, pass and rush defense.
RB Michael Dyer did most of the work on offense, rushing a whopping 41 times for 141 yards and a score. Auburn likely wouldn’t have won without backup QB Kiehl Frazier, who came in as a change of pace from Trotter and carried nine times for 48 yards. Trotter is the starter, but offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said Frazier will continue to get playing time. The Tigers’ four victories this season have come by an average margin of 7.5 points. Throw out the 30-14 win over Florida Atlantic and that margin drops to 4.7.
Arkansas (4-1, 0-1) certainly can’t afford another conference loss after already having lost to Alabama. The Hogs bounced back from that last week by rallying past Texas A&M 42-38 despite trailing by 18 at halftime. Tyler Wilson had a school-record 510 yards passing (and three TDs) against Texas A&M, the fifth-most yards in SEC history. And Jarius Wright had 13 catches for a school-record 281 yards and a touchdown. Still, that Hogs defense did allow a whopping 628 total yards.
Wilson, by the way, made his collegiate debut vs. Auburn last year when Ryan Mallett went out injured. Wilson threw for 332 yards and four touchdowns in the last 2 1/2 quarters of the Razorbacks' 65-43 loss. Those were the most TD passes allowed by Auburn at home since 2000. These teams have split the past 10 meetings, although the Hogs won the previous three before last year’s loss. Auburn has won three of the past four in Fayetteville.
